2012 May Membership SJ Marriott

Membership Reception at the San Juan  Marriott

For our May meeting, instead of our usual sit-down dinner, Skal International Puerto Rico held a reception in the private section of the Red Coral Lounge in the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino.  Marriott GM and Skalleague (and former president) Hans-Georg Roehrbein and his team did a spectacular job of hosting our group: great food, drinks and ambience!

Our guests were over a dozen pre-qualified candidates for Skal membership. Each was nominated by a member and received a special invitation from President Ronald Flores and from Membership Chairperson Mickey Espada. An unparalleled list of 29 potential members had been submitted to the SI Board by the membership committee and various members of the club.

In addition to those that attended, about a dozen candidates excused themselves because they were off island or had other commitments but expressed strong interest in the club and will be invited to the June SIPR meeting.

What did we do? Each attending Skal member was urged to try to meet and talk to each of the invited guests—and they did it with a passion. New friendships were launched during the evening! Everyone in attendance wore a nametag prepared by club secretary (and past president) Irene Castillo, which helped break the ice.

Ronald asked Hans to give the Skal toast and Mickey Espada introduced the guests. We enjoyed a showing of the SI DVD and Ronald surprised the group with a showing of the video prepared for the 50th Anniversary of Skal in Puerto Rico and featuring interviews with many former SIPR presidents. Brochures provided by SIUSA Region IV VP Martha McClintock were given to each guest, along with an application form.

It was an evening of Skal amicale with many new faces who said they wanted to a part of our club. Our goal is 10 new members this year (although Mickey’s goal is 15!) and the reception was a wonderful start!
