2010 Aug. Sofia, Old San Juan

Sofia Dazzles Skalleagues

Some 42 Skalleagues and guests attended our August SIPR Dinner Meeting at Sofia in Old San Juan--and everyone was very glad they did! Owner (and soon to be Skalleague) Sandro Calenda pulled out all the stops to dazzle us with fantastic food, spectacular service and a colorful and comfortable ambience. He closed his restaurant to the public so that we could enjoy his staff’s undivided attention.

The kitchen presented dish after dish of wonderful Italian specialties, from the appetizers that everyone raved about (especially the baby octopus in Luciano tomato sauce and the veal meatballs in a sweet onion sauce) to the main course choices of shrimp and asparagus risotto, grilled mahi-mahi and port tenderloin medallions in wine sauce.

And the wines! There was a seemingly endless flow of prosecco, chardonnay, and shiraz-like, Nero d’Avola from Sicily, a wonderful combination of flavors of food and wine.

Congratulations to Sandro for a fine event--and to our Skalleague and former president Bruno Calenda (Sandro’s dad) for your part in this great success--he’s a chip off the old block!
