2007 April Installation SJ Marriott

2007-2008 Board Installed, April 17, 2007

The new Skal International Puerto Rico Board was officially installed during a ceremony and dinner at the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino on Tuesday evening, April 17. Outgoing President Joanne Ferguson welcomed guests and reviewed the activities of the year, thanking Omar Pagan, this year’s director in charge of dining events, for selecting a spectacular line up of venues for our meetings. 1990 President Keith Olson led the Skal toast.

“Every dinner was memorable, well executed, and we enjoyed excellent food and service,” Joannne said. “Due to Omar’s expertise, it was difficult for us to choose the Dining Event of the Year 2006-2007, but in the end we did, however.” The award went to the Ritz Carlton San Juan Hotel, Spa & Casino. Skalleague Kevin Schwab, the hotel’s general manager, accepted the award.

Joanne announced that, thanks to the hard work and generous contributions of Skalleagues and friends, our second annual fundraising event at El Convento Hotel in Old San Juan raised nearly $19,000 for our favorite charity, El Hogar Niñito Jesús, and for the newly created Puerto Rico Skal Hospitality Student Fund. Eileen de Jesus of El Hogar Niñito Jesús accepted the donation, which will be used to purchase new playground equipment.

Ronald Flores introduced the Puerto Rico Skal Hospitality Student Fund and explained that it is not a scholarship, but a grant program loosely modeled on the Skal’s Florimond Volckaert Fund, designed to help needy and deserving tourism students. Contributions to the fund are voluntary and do not come from Skal membership dues. Each student is sponsored by a Skal Puerto Rico member, who helps prepare the application for assistance, presents it to the board and monitors the use of the grant. “In short, Skal Puerto Rico wants to help students to better prepare themselves to be the leaders in our industry—and, of course, to become future Skalleagues,” he said. Members of Skal Puerto Rico will be able to access details about the fund and download application forms at this website, beginning May 1.

Joanne announced that the Ronald was chosen as the 2006-2007 Skalleague of the Year. “Ronald has worked hard for Puerto Rico Skal this year, representing us in Thailand, creating the website, creating the new Hospitality Student Fund, attending just about every Board and Dinner Meeting, and overall contributing significantly to the club,” she said on granting him the honor.

President Joanne Ferguson, Skalleagues and guests applauded the work of the 2006-2006 board, which included Hans-Georg Roehrbein, Vice President, Lizette Perez, Secretary, Roberto Rampolla, Treasurer, Willie Chin, Director, Bernice Cordero, Director, Ronald Flores, Director, Omar Pagan, Director, Fernando Sanchez, Director, Irene Castillo, Past President and Linda Wheeler, SIUSA Rep.

The 2007-2008 board was then presented to the membership and the pin ceremony completed. Members of the new board are Hans-Georg Roehrbein, president, Ronald Flores, vice president, Julian Cable Treadwell, secretary, Roberto Rampolla, treasurer, Bernice Cordero, director, Yvette Gonzalez, director, Thomas Pauly, director. Fernando Sanchez, director, Ana Maria Viscasillas, director, Joanne Ferguson, past president, Irene Castillo, SIUSA Rep., and Jose Forastieri, auditor.

Joanne closed her year as president with these words: “Thank YOU for the honor of being your president, and of working with a great group of people who have been your board this year. I feel that a lot was accomplished … our membership remained strong, and we have submitted a bid to host the NAASC Congress in 2009, our 50th anniversary. We had high levels of attendance at most of our dinner meetings, and we are seeing new faces becoming involved at the board level.

“On that note, I urge more of you to become involved, attend the meetings, support the club’s objectives, and contact the new board to assist on committees. Friendship and tourism are the two underlying themes of Skal. This year we were focused on these themes, and I am proud of our results. There’s a lot we can do, this group of Friends doing Business together. I am confident that with your new Board, you’ll be seeing even greater things.”
