SIPR Hospitality Student Fund

During the 2007 Installation Dinner Meeting, the board has asked me to announce one of our most exciting new projects: The Puerto Rico Skal Hospitality Student Fund.

The Fund is not a scholarship, but a grant program designed to help tourism students on the island expand their knowledge. The grant will help them to participate in activities they might not be able to afford.

We have designed the fund to be a one-time grant, loosely modeled on the Skal International Florimond Volckaert (Volkert) Fund concept. As with the Florimond Volckaert Fund, recipients have no obligation to repay it, and contributions to the fund are completely voluntary and do not come from Skal membership dues.

Each student is nominated and sponsored by a Skal Puerto Rico member, who helps prepare the application for assistance, presents it to the board and monitors the use of the grant. Students can apply to attend seminars, workshops, or conventions in Puerto Rico including activities organized by the Puerto Rico Hotel & Tourism Association, the Convention Bureau, The Tourism Company, Skal, the Association of Chefs or Bartenders, or any other tourism-related non-profit entity. The grant can be applied to registration, meals, materials, transportation or other participation expenses.

Students can also apply for help in attending off-island events related to the their field of study, or to purchase special equipment, books or supplies that are not normally required or available as part of their course of study.

In short, Skal Puerto Rico wants to help students to better prepare themselves to be the leaders in our industry—and, of course, to become our future Skalleagues.

Members of Skal Puerto Rico can access details about the fund and download application forms at our website,

Thank you! Ronald Flores
