Maggie Moo Fundraiser

‘Fun’ Raiser

"Fundraisers can be fun," says Skål International Puerto Rico President Ivan Puig. He proved it by organizing an ice cream afternoon at Maggie Moo’s Ice Cream and Treatery in San Juan with proceeds benefiting needy children.

"It was a 'Celebrity Scoop Night' featuring Puerto Rico Skål board members as the celebrity scoopers," he said. In addition to Ivan, SIPR VP Osvaldo Rivera, Director Maritza Toste, and Secretary Angel Luis Marrero manned the scoops. Among the cheerleaders were former SIUSA rep. Ronald Flores and Director Irene Castillo.

Skål in Puerto Rico "adopted" El Hogar del Pequeno Joshua (The Little Joshua Home) many years ago as one of its community aide programs. The club and individual members have made monetary and other contributions, participated in fundraisers and have canvassed hoteliers in Puerto Rico for contributions of linen and other items. The home is the only facility in Puerto Rico that cares for infants and toddlers born of women who are addicts or infected with HIV, and are homeless or destitute.

"The need is great," said Clara Alonso, who represented the Hogar during the event. "We have more infants than ever to care for, so every dollar helps—especially to buy disposable diapers. As you can imagine, they are in huge demand!" Skål member Celestino Arias responded quickly by sending a supply to the home.

"Maggie Moo donated 15% of the proceeds that day to the Hogar. We didn’t sell much, but with some matching funds and contributions from our members, we hope to have had helped this wonderful organization," Puig said.

If you would like to contribute, you can visit the home’s Fundrazer site or contact Hogar el Pequeño Joshua at 787-282-0012.
